Goodbye 2021, and for that matter, what seems like one long year 2020-2021. Just like when your computer gets hung up on a site or program, you power down and reboot. We powered down for the holidays and we are now rebooting for this New Year!
It’s my strong belief that being more mindful can help reduce anxiety and improve mental health.
Likewise, adopting healthy lifestyle habits such as chiropractic care and exercise can help optimize both physical and mental well-being.
Mindfulness vs. Reflexiveness
A few years ago, I participated in a program titled Higher Order Thinking (HOT). The content and program were created by an interesting former Canadian Forces member, the late Dr. Bernie Novokowsky.
He combined his experience in the military and studies in business systematics and began advising CEOs and individuals in the art of critical thinking. He described a foundational principle under the acronym NEPP. This stood for noticing, explaining, prescribing, then performing. This was to encourage mindful responses to situations you faced.
The late Stephen Covey explained it in his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, as the gap between the stimulus and response. I am not trying to minimize the real impact of the pandemic on the health and lives of people. However, fear and anxiety escalate when we feel we have no control or input in our circumstances.
You Can Take Control of Your Health
After two years of constant media attention to the risks to our health, I think it is time to focus on what you can control in terms of managing your health. Our resilient bodies are designed to be both self-healing and self-regulating. Good health and resilience are in large measure under your control, and result from daily choices that either move you towards or away from health.
Choose to Be a Thermostat
Another word picture suggests it is the difference between acting as a thermometer by responding to the environment, or choosing to be a thermostat, by setting the tone of the environment. Are you doing all you can to optimize your health and bolster your body’s immunity? Are you prepared to take responsibility for your health and the health of your family?
Over the next few months, I look forward to sharing and engaging with you in a conversation about health optimization.
